May 1st is an important deadline for seniors to decide which college they will be attending this fall.  Please make sure to contact the colleges you are planning on attending this fall.   Also Seniors are reminded to submit their Post High School Plans using the link under ‘News’ tab at the Sprague website.  5/4

In this week’s Scholarship spotlight is specific to students planning to attend Chemeketa Community College.   Chemeketa Community College is offering 25, scholarships to graduating seniors who are from underrepresented populations and who have overcome adversity.  Students will need to write a one-page essay “Why I’m Going to College”, and provide an unofficial transcript.  Students who are selected to receive a scholarship must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, and attend a Summer Bridge session, which is described in the scholarship application.  Students may submit their essays starting Monday through Wednesday May 16th at Sprague@skeducationfoundation.org. 5/4

Twenty teams of high school students across the state created videos for the Oregon Youth Employment Safety Video contest.  Seven were selected as finalists.  On Saturday, at an event at Northern Lights Theater, Eden McCall was awarded First place and some prizes for her amazing work.  Her video was shown on the big screen in front of a theater packed with other finalists.  Most of the videos were created by large teams, it was even more impressive that she created this video completely on her own.  A link to Eden’s video can be found on the Sprague Website.  Way to Go Eden!!! 5/2

Are you looking for a fun, interactive summer volunteer opportunity?  Do you want to help build the Sprague community into a more spirited, high achieving group of students that has fun both inside and outside of the classroom?  Then volunteer during our Amazing Race Summer Transition Program right here at Sprague High School!  This program is for incoming freshman to help with transition skills from middle school to high school.  You survived your freshman year, why not help others through your experience!  See Mrs. W. in Room 156 for an application or more information. 5/4

Buenos dias Sprague! This Friday the Spanish Club will be hosting the 5th annual Cinco de Mayo celebration with food and music! Everyone is welcome to stop by room 124 after school. As usual, it will be potluck style, so please bring your favorite Mexican dish to share! Nos vemos Friday after school in room 124! 5/4

The Salem Public Library Foundation is partnering with the Salem Public Library to support a paid summer internship in the Teen Scene. The internship is funded by an Inclusive Internship Initiative grant from the Public Library Association, a division of the American Library Association. The internship includes 10-12 weeks of paid work in the Teen Scene for 25-30 hours per week, as well as two all-expense paid training trips: to Washington DC from June 14-17; and to Chicago from September 28-30. (Both are mandatory)  Application packets are available in the College and Career Center starting today.  The deadline is May 8th. 5/7

Congrats to our Solo Musicians who had a great weekend at the OSAA State Championships.  Ellie Warner, earned 4th place in soprano voice,  Ellie Deloretto, earned 2nd place in soprano voice and Damon Zavala, earned a 4th place in tenor voice and won the 2018 State Championship in violin.  Great Job Oly Musicians!!

The Girls Golf Team won the final GVC match of the season yesterday. Quincy Beyrouty was the medalist with a 2 over par 74! Natalie Bock had her season best and finished 2nd, while Reese Sherwood finished 5th. The Varsity team is undefeated in Conference play going into Districts next Monday and Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis.

Congratulation to Sprague’s Speech and Debate team for their award winning performances this last weekend at the OSAA State Championships held at Western Oregon University. Olympian speakers competed against students from 64 schools across the state in 14 speaking and debating events. The following students earned individual awards: Lindsey Williams and Santiago Monleon tied for 9th in Lincoln Douglas Debate. Geovanny Tolentino and Deepak Illango tied for 9th in Parliamentary Debate. Eden McCall and Arianna Martin tied for 9th in Public Forum Debate. Emma Michaux was a semi-finalist in Expository Speaking, Megan Baus was a semi-finalist in Dramatic Interpretation. Alyssa Azar was a semi-finalist in Humorous Interpretation. Francesca Thompson placed 4th in Poetry Interpretation and 3rd in Prose Interpretation. Chauncey Koulibali placed 3rd in Dramatic Interpretation and 3rd in Poetry Interpretation. Ramon Martinez placed 2nd in After Dinner Speaking. And Lindsey Williams placed 2nd in Impromptu Speaking and is your State Champion in Extemporaneous Speaking. The team placed 3rd Overall in 6A competition. Awesome job Oly Speechies!

The potluck will be today from 2:30 – 3:30 in the commons. All students are welcome. The cost is either bringing a cultural dish to share or $5 if you don’t bring a dish to share. Sign-up sheets to bring food are posted outside Mr. Schueller’s, Mrs. Downs, and Mrs. Lentz’s rooms. We hope to see you all there to celebrate all of the diversity at Sprague! 4/20

Prom tickets will be sold this week during lunch.  Single tickets are 35 dollars and couple tickets are 50 dollars. Prom tickets will not be sold to students with fines and fees so get those taken care of beforehand. Students will exit class at 10 AM today and drive or carpool to the Oregon State Capitol here in Salem. We will have speeches, marching, and later join a town hall with legislators on the critical issue of Gun Policy Reform.
We want to emphasize that this is not a Sprague-endorsed or sanctioned event.  If you choose to walk out, it will be an unexcused absence.  Classes will take place as usual with teachers instructing and students learning.  To be responsible, we ask that you sign an exit log so Sprague staff can best account for all students that day to ensure the safety of all. You can sign this log on the day of or beforehand in the main office. Again, it will be an unexcused absence and school staff will not be supervising the walkout at the State Capitol.

The Girls Golf Team won the 4th straight GVC match of the season yesterday at Quail Valley Golf Course. Four of the varsity players finished in the top ten! Quincy Beyrouty finished 2 over par and 1 off the lead. Reese Sherwood finished 3rd, Natalie Bock finished 5th, and Taylor Monismith finished tied for 8th.  Avery Davidson was the JV medalist shooting a personal best for the season!

Attention all students: Leadership, Spanish and French national honor societies are partnering together to hold a cultural diversity potluck! The potluck will be on Friday, April 20th from 2:30 – 3:30 in the commons. All students are welcome. The cost is either bringing a cultural dish to share or $5 if you don’t bring a dish to share. Sign-up sheets to bring food are posted outside Mr. Schueller’s, Mrs. Downs, and Mrs. Lentz’s rooms. We hope to see you all there to celebrate all of the diversity at Sprague! 4/20

The deadline for field trips to Chemeketa Orientation on 04/20, the University of Portland on 04/22,  and  Linn-Benton Community College on 04/23 are due by Monday, April 16th.   Students can pick up blue permission forms in the College and Career Center. 4/16

Today during lunch in the commons, Oly Pageant tickets will be sold for $12.00 each. Please come and support Doernbecher Children’s Hospital this Saturday at 7:00pm at the Elsinore Theatre.

The Girls Golf Team finished 35 strokes ahead of the competition yesterday to win another GVC match, this time at McNary Golf Course. Quincy Beyrouty won the match by two strokes. Natalie Bock finished 4th and Reese Sherwood finished tied for 5th.  On the JV team, Avery Davidson finished tied for 3rd and Kennedy Merzenich finished tied for 5th. 

In miserable conditions, Team Sprague Track and Field swept South Salem winning both the boys and girls dual.  Alexa Smith won both the 100m and 200m ,  Megan Sims won all three throws, and Elise Abbott won the 800m.    For the boys, Wiley Roberts and Jarod Smith won the 100m and 200m, Preston Reason won the High Hurdles, Jacob Luna won the Shot Put and Javelin, Eli Larson won the Discus and Colby Evenson won the 800m.

Team Sprague Track and Field will not have practice today, but will resume our training tomorrow at the Track.

All baseball games have been cancelled today. Practice will start at 3:00 in the barn.

Today’s scheduled Q & A session with University of Oregon Admission Officials for future students has been postponed to a later date.   The University of Oregon is still hosting all Fall 2018 students on Thursday night at the Salem Convention Center starting at 6:30 p.m.   There will also be a breakfast for Pathway Oregon recipients on Saturday, April 14 at the Red Lion Hotel in Salem from 8:30 am to 11:00 am.

The Girls Golf Team finished five strokes off the lead for second place in the Ridgeview Invitational at Juniper Golf Course on Friday. With 8 teams and over 50 golfers, junior Quincy Beyrouty shot a 5 over 77 to win the tournament. Sophomore Reese Sherwood tied for 8th and senior Natalie Bock tied for 10th. Taylor Monismith and Chloe Elmore helped the varsity team claim the second place trophy. 4/9
