Attention, Sprague Students. This Monday is Presidents’ day.  It is the day that we honor both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington’s birthdays.  Together they are our greatest presidents. George Washington, who was born on February 22, led America to independence from the British.  He refused the title of king, and stepped down from the presidency.  Thomas Jefferson said this about Washington: “He was incapable of fear, meeting personal dangers with the calmest unconcern.” Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, in 1809.   He was president during the Civil War, and managed to help free the slaves and save the Union of the United States.   He loved to read and had special compassion for animals.  Once, when he was young lawyer, he went into a large mud puddle to free a pig that was stuck!  These presidents saw our day and hoped that America would remain a union: free, with rights for all.  When you do the right thing, are kind to others, and stand up for equality, you are honoring their memory.
