Students, this is Constitution month.  We honor this month the signing of the US Constitution on September 17th, 1787.   Our legislature in the State of Oregon has passed a law that this important document is acknowledged by our schools in this important month.

Here is the preamble to this important document:  (READ THIS SLOWLY)

We the people of the United States,
in order to form a more perfect union,
establish justice,
insure domestic tranquility,
provide for the common defense,
promote the general welfare,
and secure the blessings
of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,
do ordain and establish
this Constitution for the United States of America.

Books are not the only items threatened with censorship.  According to the American Library Association there where 354 challenges in 2017:  67 percent were books, 18 percent were magazines, films and games. 7 percent were programs, and 8 percent were displays or other.  This week, take some time to explore all the areas that are facing censorship.  Think about your first amendment rights and what it means to have access to a wide variety of materials.

Banning books silences stories and discussions.  Censorship succeeds when no one talks about it.  A book challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict a book.  A Ban is the removal of a book based on content. Raise your voice and speak up for banned and challenged books.

By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.  Celebrate your freedom to read by checking out a library book today!

The Sprague Library is celebrating Banned Books Week. This is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Highlighting the value of free and open access to information, Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek, to publish, to read, and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.  Stop by the library and see if your favorite book has been challenged.

Oly Lounge gift certificates will be given as a reward for its safe return.    Thank you!!!
