Attention Students:  Today is October 17th. In 1492, Columbus was already in the New World for 10 days.  It is required by Oregon State Law to teach about this event.  Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, sailed to find a route to the Spice Islands and Far East.  Land was sighted on October 12, 1492.  His voyage was a world changing event. The post Colombian world brought death from European diseases, while others were enslaved or mistreated by colonial powers. Plants and technology were exchanged between the old world and the new.  Potatoes, Tomatoes and Chocolate are from the new world.  Those who are of Italian heritage honor Columbus's courage and the dawn of the great age of exploration.
