In April 1968, when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, blacks across the nation took to the streets in grief and anger.  In Portland, a group of about twenty young blacks began meeting to study the writings of Malcolm X and the Little Red Book of quotations from China’s chairman Mao Tse-Tung.  In June 1969, a member of the study group was beaten and jailed.  Upon his release on bail, Kent Ford held a press conference on the steps of the Portland police station.  “If they keep coming in with these fascist tactics,” he announced, “we’re going to defend ourselves.”  With this public pronouncement, members of the original group retooled themselves as a chapter of the Black Panthers in Portland.

Athletes, this is your final week to get your athletic registrations completed and your sport physicals turned in if you are planning to participate in a spring sport. Monday will be the first official day of practice and tryouts. Team lists will go out to coaches Friday after school with the names of eligible athletes who can tryout on Monday.

The Sprague Olyannes Dance team will be hosting a dance team competition at Sprague High School on Saturday, February 29th.  Over 350 dancers from 20 teams will be competing. These teams will be representing Salem, Stayton, Albany, Silverton, Woodburn, Milwaukie, Gladstone, Oregon City, Grants Pass, Eugene and Lebanon. The round starts at 1 pm and the entry fee is $10 for the day. Sprague students are invited to come and enjoy the entertainment! 2/28

Each day this week, the ASPIRE Room will remain open until 5 p.m. to assist any Sprague student and/or family to complete their FAFSA, Oregon Promise, OSAC, and provide any scholarship assistance.  The ASPIRE Room will open on Saturday morning for anyone needing assistance as well.  If you have any questions, please see Ms. Dunn. 2/28

The Theater Department’s Spring show Nightwatch has arrived!  Our protagonist, Ellie is suffering insomnia when she happens to see a murder across the street. But when police arrive to investigate, the evidence seems to have disappeared. Doubting her sanity her husband and best friend intervene but is it enough? When the police, and her own beloved friends are acting strangely and Ellie is convinced that a murder is happened, what lengths will she go to in order to prove her case?  Running February 27, 28 and 29^th and March 5, 6 and 7^th at 7pm– this is a thrilling show you don’t want to miss, can you figure out who is guilty of murder? 3/5

Artie Wilson was a professional baseball player who was a longtime Portland resident.  Artie Wilson played for the Pacific Coast League for most of his professional baseball career.  Born in Springfield, Alabama, on October 28, 1920, he was the first African American player hired on an integrated team, the Oakland Oaks.  Wilson played shortstop for the Birmingham Black Barons, a Negro League team from 1942 to 1948.  During his last year with the Barons, the team competed in the Negro League World Series, and Wilson became the last professional baseball player to bat over 400.

Lizzie Koontz Weeks was an African American activist in Portland in the years after women in Oregon had achieved the right to vote in 1912.  She organized black women to empower them to be successful voters and was an early candidate for local party office.

Oregon’s most celebrated rodeo, the Pendleton Round-Up, began in 1910 and included African American competitors from the beginning. The Round-Up’s most famous black rider, George Fletcher, was born in the Midwest, but he moved to Pendleton as a young man, learning from horsemen on the nearby Umatilla Indian Reservation.

In addition, freshmen Olivia Robbins and Kayla Pobuda placed in the top 10 of the novice drill down competition. Congratulations to all of the Olyannes!

Oregon Black History: In 2002 a historic vote was put before Oregon voters.  It set out to remove obsolete language from the law books.  It read: Allowing this prohibited and biased language to remain is hurtful as well as unconstitutional.  It is time to put an unenlightened period of Oregon's history behind us and remove this language from our state Constitution.

Oregon Black History:  On April 22, 1999, Oregon had a day of acknowledgement ceremony.  A resolution was introduced that admitted Oregon's history was marred by racial discrimination and great injustice toward people of color, including Native Americans, African Americans, Chinese, Latinos, and Japanese Americans.  

On Friday, February 21^st, there will be a field trip to Chemeketa Community College for members of the senior class.  This field trip is designed to assist any senior planning to attend Chemeketa in the Fall.  To sign up, please visit Ms. Dunn in the College & Career Center.  The deadline to sign up for the field trip is today.   2/19

Hey Olys! This Thursday, February 20^th, at lunch, Sprague’s French Club will be hosting a Mardi Gras party! There will be beignets, chocolate coins and other tasty treats.  There will be jester hat making, jazz music and most importantly, a chance to be King!
