Do you want to fall in love? Well we can’t help you with that, but there is a price for everything. For the small price of 1, 2, or 5 dollars, you can send someone special a val-o-gram to create the spark! We will be selling val-o-grams on the commons stage at lunch now through February 9th. You can also purchase them from Ms. Atkinson in room 133. Sweeten someone’s day with a val-o-gram!

Key Club is partnering with Church of the Park to help the houseless people of the Salem community. From January 3rd through February 15th we will be gathering items to give to build warmth for those with housing instability during this cold season. Items such as coats for all ages that your family no longer is using- bath products,(toothpaste and toothbrushes) and non-perishable foods (like granola bars or pre wrapped jerky) food items that are portable. If you are wishing to donate: Mrs. Lee is taking items from Freshman, Mrs. K-T from Sophomores, Mr. Nickel for Juniors, and Mr. Mahi for Seniors. Check with your family, maybe they have items to share. We appreciate your help Sprague, let’s keep our community warm this winter!

Attention Oly’s! Spring sports registration is now open! If you are interested in participating in baseball, softball, tennis, golf or track and field this spring please go on to FamilyID (found on the Sprague website) to register today! Students as a reminder you MUST have passed 5 out of 8 classes from Semester 1 and currently be passing 5 out of 8 classes during semester 2 to be eligible. You will also need a current sports physical that is good through the entire Spring season. Please note sports physicals are valid for 2 years. Don’t let an expired sports physical be the reason you are unable to participate. If you need a sports physical, get it scheduled now! If you have any questions, please stop by the athletic office, and see Mrs. Butler. Go Oly’s!!

This coming Monday is Martin Luther King National Day of Service.  In 1994, the Federal Government made this a day of service.  It is not meant to be a holiday—but a day of thoughtful planned service to others.  You may want to pick up some garbage in the neighborhood, help a neighbor, or help your parents.  By helping others, you will honor the legacy of this great man.

During the century after the Civil War, African Americans remained segregated in the South.  There they were treated with prejudice, denied voting rights and even lynched.   This time was called the “Jim Crow” era.

Many African American leaders sought to overcome this.  One leader was Martin Luther King.  He was a minister who led hundreds of thousands of blacks to use civil protest to bring about change. He would be killed in 1968, at the age of 39.

Thank you, Dr. King for changing the world with your bravery!

Just a reminder that starting today the district is limiting spectators at athletic events. Please note that unless you are one of the four spectators listed on the athlete’s gate list, you will not be able to attend these events. The district will be reevaluating this in early February and we will get updated information out as it comes in. Thank you for your understanding. Go Oly’s!

It’s about time for some good news! In our latest art contest, Sprague takes eight out of 14 winning slots including the Grand Prize Cover Art. Our winners and their drawings include:

10th Grade:
Lamoni Porras for “Greenwashing”
Hannah Duhart for “Soap Greenwasher”
Xiaoqing Liao for “Spread Green”
Katie Flores for “Red Hot S-Candle”

11th Grade:
Rubie Morrissette for “Sustainable vs Non-Sustainable”
Paige Reid for “Every Drop is Lies”

12th Grade:
Rylee Johnson for “The Wrong Kind of Green”

Grand Prize Cover Art –
12th Grade:
Lily Chase for “Quality over Quantity”

The theme for the 2022 calendar art contest, open to all students in Marion County and West Salem, and sponsored by Marion County Environmental Services and the Mid-Valley Garbage & Recycling Association was “Greenwashing: 12 Months of Eco-Swaps.” Greenwashing is the practice of using advertising, buzzwords, and suggestive packaging to convince consumers that products or practices are “sustainable” or “eco-friendly” when they are not. This relatively new term was not familiar to our class so we began to investigate it with research and writing, which led to concept development, planning and sketching, and a  final draft.

Our winners will all be part of the annual art calendar, receive a Visa Giftcard, and be honored at a televised Marion County Board of Commissioners Meeting coming up!
