February 14th is not just Valentine’s Day, it is also the date that Oregon joined the United States.

Oregon became a state in the Union in 1859.  It was agreed that it would be a non-slave state to prevent regional conflicts that would begin the Civil War the next year and a half.  At the time, all white men were allowed to vote:  other minorities were excluded—including women.  The document for statehood was voted on in Salem, the state capitol.

Our state animal is the beaver, our state flower is the Oregon Grape, and our state bird is the Western Meadow Lark.

Our state motto is “She flies with her own wings.”  Our State tree is the Douglas fir.  Our state fruit is the pear, and our state drink is—you guessed it: Milk.   We even have a state nut (the hazelnut) and a state dance: the square dance.

Happy Birthday, beautiful Oregon!

Olys, unfortunately, the library has once again experienced not one, but two thefts: Our antique dictionary and a Rubik’s cube. In addition to the theft, our Library has been repeatedly littered with food, which has resulted in a mouse problem. So, until our stolen items are returned and our students can respect the no eating policy, the library will be closed during lunch. And as a reminder, you must have a release, an online class, or a note from a teacher to be in the library during class time and you must have your physical ID card to check anything out. Thank you for your cooperation! 2/1
