Students:  This month is genocide awareness month.  Raising genocide awareness is one way of preventing genocides from occurring.

The term genocide was created by Rafael Lempkin after World War 2 to describe an event when one groups wants to eliminate another group.

The Holocaust, Rwanda, and Cambodia are well known genocides.

Many genocides result in widespread death.  However, a genocide may eliminate a group by restricting their rights to procreate.

All genocides dehumanize people and reduce them to objects that must be eliminated.   Genocide remains a tragic part of our human history.

To create a better world, we must be aware of past events and treat others as individuals, worthy of respect and dignity.
