 December 7, 2021

80 years ago this morning, Pearl Harbor, a U.S. naval base in Pearl Harbor Hawaii was the target of a surprise attack by the Japanese military.  This event brought the United States into World War II.  The next day, Hitler declared war on the United States, and from then on, the United States entered into World War II.  Forty Oregon men died in Pearl Harbor.  This included 18 year old John Burgess:

From the deck of the West Virginia, the crew could see saw two huge flashes of fire as the USS Arizona was hit and a bomb detonated in a powder magazine. Burning debris began raining on the West Virginia's quarterdeck. Somewhere down in the darkness inside the West Virginia that morning was John Burgess, who was unable to make it out to safety. He is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.

Over 410,000 Americans died in World War II.  It remained the highest death toll among all the wars, including the Civil war, for combat deaths. Take a moment to think about those men and women who died for our country.

This week is National Computer Science Week.  Sprague High School is taking part in Hour of Code.  Each day this week we will be highlighting some information in the announcements.  Take some time to read the posters in the hall.  Did you know that Computer Science is foundational.  Try an Hour of Code by going to hourofcode.com and doing some of the activities.  Every 21st century student should take a computer science class.  Keep on Coding Sprague.

Sprague High School values the diverse language abilities of our students and provides opportunities for students with strong skills in a language other than English to earn world language credit. Students earn world language credits by taking a test that assesses their language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Contact the testing specialist Geordan Lightburn in room 136 to learn more about registering for a proficiency test available in your language. The deadline to register is December 15. 12/15

As we know Olys, the giving season is upon us and what’s better than being able to make this Christmas a memorable one for a kid? You can do just that by donating to our Annual Hoover Gift Drive by taking necessities such as gloves and beanies as well as lots of toys to our Hoover Gift Boxes kept and located in Mr. Nickel’s Room 102, Mrs. Keating-Thomas’s Room 117, Mr. Mahi’s Room 17, Mr. Masten’s Room 143 and Mrs. Oliver’s Room 8. This helps us put together gift bags with toys and necessities for over 400 students at Hoover Elementary, so this is just as important and means just as much to us as it would mean to the kids so please make sure to donate if possible! 12/15

Olys! We need your help! Our emergency supply of Chromebooks is almost gone! Please remember to bring your Chromebook and charger with you everyday. If you do check out an emergency Chromebook please make sure to return it the SAME day.  Big thanks from the library!!!

The Sprague Olyannes (oh-lee-annes) dance team are the state novelty division champions for 2021! They earned first place in the novelty category at the DDCA fall championships at Sherwood high school on Saturday, December 4.  The Olyannes were undefeated in this category through 4 competitions this fall. In addition, the dance team placed third in state in the modern dance division against strong competition at the same tournament.  Two dancers also placed in the top 10 of the individual championship drill down event: freshman Bella Terzenbach (Ter-zen-bock) was 9th in the novice division and Junior Kayla Pobuda (Poh-boo-duh) was 6th in the advanced division. Congratulations to all of the Sprague dancers on their success during an amazing fall season! 12/7
