Salem's Black History:  Mark Hatfield, who would later become Senator Mark Hatfield, had to drive famous singers Paul Robeson and Marion Anderson up to Portland because they were refused a hotel room in Salem because of their skin color.  Senator Hatfield never forgot this and helped to pass laws that banned discrimination in all public places in Oregon.

On Friday, February 21^st, there will be a field trip to Chemeketa Community College for members of the senior class.  This field trip is designed to assist any senior planning to attend Chemeketa in the Fall.  To sign up, please visit Ms. Dunn in the College & Career Center.  The deadline to sign up for the field trip is Wednesday, Feb. 19^th.   2/18

Then come to our first Sprague movie night next Wednesday, February 19th where we will be showing “Spiderman Far From Home” at 6:30. There will be concessions and Italian sodas for sale. Tickets will be sold on the commons stage at lunch through Tuesday the 18th, as well as at the door. It cost $3 with ASB and $5 without ASB. Bring a camping chair and a friend! 2/19

Attention all track and field athletes, all tennis players, golfers, baseball and softball players, time is running out to sign up for a spring sport. If you are planning to participate, you must get your on-line registration completed as soon as possible. Go to the Sprague website for the link and get this taken care of today. Remember, you must be enrolled in and passing at least five classes and have a current sport physical on file. 2/14

Salem's Black History: In 1911, E.C. Atkinson filed a lawsuit when he was not admitted to the Grand Theater in Salem, Oregon because of his skin color.  The usher who had declined his admission had to pay a fine for doing this.

Salem's Black History: Hiram Gorman was another Salem Black Pioneer.  He is buried at the Salem Pioneer Cemetery.  He was a veteran of the Civil War, and was known for his kindness and generosity to others. 2/10

The Sprague Olyannes dance team attended their first competition of the winter season at Stayton High school on Saturday, February 8 where they placed second in the show division. In addition, 10 of the 20-individual drill down awards went to Olyanne team members: freshmen Kayla Pobuda and Esther Thao, sophomore Jade Brown, juniors Sonya Frontino, Amanda Lutz, Arella Rodriguez Lentz, Marisa Bradley and Paulina Klee and seniors Hannah Li and Mackenzie Cooper. Congratulations to all the Olyannes!  2/10

Salem's Black History: In the pioneer cemetery on Rural Street is buried Reverend Obed Dickenson.  He was a friend of blacks and preached that the citizens of Salem should treat them as equals.   He was persecuted for his beliefs but remained a steadfast friend to Salem’s black community.

Salem's Black History: Before school integration ended in the 1950s, the black citizens of Salem, Oregon provided a school for their children so that they could be educated.  This school remained until 1905.  Black citizens across the nation supported education for their children which had been prohibited under slavery.

On January 3, 1868, a celebration was held to honor the emancipation proclamation which outlawed slavery in the United States.  This was the beginning of many celebrations by Oregonians, both black and white to honor the change in race relations. 2/5
