Hello Class of 2019! We have started the Graduation Countdown Board in Senior Hallway. Currently there are 121 school days until graduation! The countdown board serves as a reminder of the timeline ahead of us to complete all graduation requirements. Our vision is All Students Graduate and are Prepared for a Successful Life. Please do whatever is necessary to work with your teachers, counselors and administration to assure that you will earn your diploma for the 2019 Commencement on June 7^th!

Nov. 8^th at 6pm in the library a meeting will be held to introduce Chelsea Qualls as the new softball coach. All interested students who want to play softball are invited to meet our new coach and hear about the upcoming season.11/8

Freshmen and sophomores: Are you wanting to get more involved at school? Want to help plan school activities like dances and assemblies? Leadership is looking for freshmen and sophomores who want to get more involved during second semester. Applications are in Mr. Schueller’s room, #142, or the front office. Applications are due November 30^th, so don’t wait! 11/9

Beginning Tuesday, November 13^th – Sprague High School will be celebrating College Application Week. Students and Staff will be encouraged to wear their favorite College Gear throughout the week. Take a photo via Instagram and tag #Sprague CAW 2018 and you may win a prize at the end of the week. 11/9

Attention winter athletes: Monday November 12^th is the first official day of the winter sport season. If you are planning to participate in a winter sport, you will need to turn your athletic participation packet in to the athletic office before the end of the day today! Please keep in mind, that Monday is a holiday and all offices are closed, you will not be able to participate if you have not been cleared.

Hey Olys, would you like to learn about cosplay for comic cons? If the answer is yes, come to Manga Club’s lunch meeting today in the Library! We will teach you all you need to know to get started as well as some awesome tips and tricks of the trade. See you there! 11/8

Sprague Popcorn Lovers! Every Friday you can now find your favorite popcorn at the new popcorn window in Room 127 (Ms. Anderson’s room). This buttery goodness is still 50 cents a bag. Pop on over to Room 127, bring a friend, and treat your taste buds!

Environmental club will be meeting today at lunch in Mr. Dey’s room (room # 149). Make sure to stop by and be green!

Key Club is a volunteer organization focused on bettering our community. If that sounds like a good idea to you, come to our meeting on Thursday. Or, even better, join Key Club for our first annual leaf rake this afternoon! If you have arms and legs and would like to join us in beautifying our campus, or if you just want to come and goof around for a bit whilst we rake leaves, please come! We’ll meet in room 116 at 2:45 today.

Students of the Month

This year, Sprague will be recognizing students who are excelling at leaving an OLY Legacy by following our school-wide behavior expectations: Own Your Actions, Live a Life you are Proud Of, and Yes to Success. Each month, Sprague staff will nominate and vote on students for our Student of the Month award. The top two nominees from each grade level will be chosen as our Students of the Month.

For our Student of the Month recognition, we focused on students who excelled in the area of Owning their Actions. Congratulations to the following students who have been identified as our November Students of the Month by the Sprague staff:

The environmental club is meeting in Mr. Dey's room at lunch today. Make sure to stop by to catch our guest speakers and be green!

The Sprague Olyannes dance team attended their first competition of the fall season at Gladstone High school on November 3. The team placed second in the pom and hip hop divisions and third in the novelty category. Their high scores qualified their pom and hip hop routines for the fall championships in December. In addition, junior Amanda Lutz placed in the top 10 of the advanced individual drill down competition. Congratulations to all of the Olyannes!

Congratulations to Elise Abbott for competing in the Cross Country State Meet this past Saturday. The race took place at Lane Community College in Eugene. In a field of 155 athletes Elise placed 33^rd in a time of 19 min 16 sec. The final meet of the season had teams from every district represented, racing 5km on a fast and challenging course. Congratulations to Elise for your hard work and effort throughout the entire season. Go Olys.

Bonjour Sprague! Today after school, at 2:35, French National Honor Society will be hosting a movie night. We will be watching Ratatouille in French, but with subtitles too-- so if you are interested in watching, feel free to join us! All are welcome! Come down to room 123, Madame Downs' French room. 11/2

Attention all wrestlers and those interested in wrestling. There will be a short informational meeting today at the beginning of lunch in Coach Harris’s room—room 117. Be there to get the schedule for the upcoming season. All wrestlers be there TODAY at lunch in room 117.

Buenos Dias Sprague! The Spanish National Honor Society is hosting the DAY of the DEAD Spanish Club meeting today at lunch in room 124. Everyone is welcome to learn about this celebration of life, decorate a cookie and participate in other activities. Nos vemos! 10/31

Attention: Swimmers, Wrestlers and Basketball players, athletic participation packets are now available for pickup in the athletic office. You must be enrolled in and passing five classes to participate as well as having a current sport physical on file. Packets can be turned in starting today. 11/1

Thank you to everyone who voted for our staff pumpkin decorating contest. We guarantee there was no cheating, only creativity at its best. Our winners: 1^st place goes to Mr. Kramer with the Darth Vader pumpkin—booyah Kramer—that pumpkin rocked the holiday. 2^nd place goes to Ms. Downs, our lovely French teacher with the pumpkin saying, CARVED, nice job Ms. Downs, and finally 3rd place goes to Miss Atkinson, representing Oly Nation with her awesome Sprague pumpkin, super cool pumpkin Miss Atkinson. We do have one honorable mention, this goes to Ms. Andersen’s niece, Jaycee, by far the most authentic scary pumpkin in the contest, red eyes, toothpick teeth. Excellent job everyone. Look for our next contest for Thanksgiving!!

Hello Sprague students! If you've ever wondered about the various pronouns used today, such as bigender, polygender, or greygender, then attend the GSA Club meeting today at lunch time. A slide show will be presented and discussion following, to clarify any confusions you may have surrounding this topic. As usual, bring your lunch (and a friend) and head to room 119! Congratulations to the Class of 2019 – As of Friday, Sprague High School had 111 students and families complete their FAFSA! If you are planning to attend a certification program, 2-year program, or 4-year program, you need to apply for the FAFSA. For more assistance, please contact Ms. Dunn. 10/31

Students, come be apart of the staff pumpkin decorating event! We will have the pumpkins on display today during lunch on the stage in the commons for you to place your vote for the best pumpkin! 10/31

We have seven winners in this year’s 2018 Recycling Art Calendar Contest sponsored by the Mid-Valley Garbage & Recycling Association! One of our students also won the Grand Prize which will be announced at a ceremony on December 12^th. This year’s theme was “What it means to be green.” They will win $400 in gift cards and $500 for the Sprague Visual Art Department! Their names are: Leila Tullos, Samantha Breen, Lauren Hanes, Eliana Rivera, Ethan Pulley, Chloe Elmore and Nikki Evans.

If that wasn’t enough, Sprague Art has had eight students who applied for and were accepted for a yearlong High School Art Mentorship/Internship program sponsored by the Salem Art Association. They are: Angie Fox, Arista Patterson, Chloe Elmore, Elizabeth Orlov, Kate Swenson, Matthew Montegna, Morgan Forrester and Paige Schmelling. Congratulations Oly Artists!

Hey Oly’s, Manga Club will be hosting a Halloween Party today after school in the Library. We have spooky vibes, treats and games! So come have some fun and hang out.

School Bus Safety Training: This training is necessary to familiarize students with school bus safety procedures in case they need to ride a school bus for a field trip or other school activity. The school bus has been proven to be the safest form of land transportation available. School bus safety starts with the student. Distractions and disruptions on the school bus can cause a driver to take his eyes off the road. The five primary rules are a critical part in maintaining a safe and comfortable environment on the bus.

1. Obey the Driver

2. Respect Others

3. Sit Properly

4. Speak Softly

5. Keep the Bus Clean

In addition, student who must cross a street to get on/off the bus should follow this procedure:

Cross ten (10) feet in front of the bus.

Make eye contact with the driver and wait for his signal to tell you that it is safe to cross.

Check traffic both ways before stepping beyond the front of the bus.

Never cross the street until the bus arrives and the driver can safely cross you with the bus’s safety lights and stop sign.

In the event of a collision or any other type of emergency, take the following steps:
          Listen for directions from the bus driver
          Stay calm
          Notify 911 if instructed to do so by the bus driver.
          Know where to find emergency equipment
                   The fire extinguisher is usually in the front of the bus near the exit door.
                   The first aid kit is located in the compartment above the windshield.
                   Emergency triangles are located in the compartment above the windshield.
                   Place the triangles outside the bus-both behind and in front.
          Know how to evacuate the bus if necessary.
                   Leave all personal items on the bus.
                   Locate all emergency exits.

Front and rear emergency exit doors should be the first choice for evacuating the bus.

Window exits and roof hatches are used for evacuating the bus only if the bus is on its side.

With the cooperation of each student riding the bus, Salem-Keizer school buses can continue to be the safest form of transportation available.
