Students, 70 years ago, on this day, thousands of American and Allied troopers gave their lives to free Europe from the grip of Nazi Invaders.    Those who landed on the beach in the first wave faced imminent death....and one entire landing craft had no survivors. All of occupied Europe held their breath in hopes that the landing would succeed.

In Amsterdam, Holland, Anne Frank and her family eagerly heard news of these landings.  Anne Frank even plotted out the invasion on a map in her attic hiding place.  Today you will go to class, hang out with your friends, go to a movie, but pause a moment and think about the young men who fought so bravely.  They made the greatest sacrifice so you could enjoy your freedoms.   We honor their memory today.

Students, 70 years ago, in 1945 thousands of men boarded ships and planes to prepare for the Normandy Landings.  They prepared to fight the German soldiers and take back occupied territories of the Nazi invaders.  Many knew they would die...one of those men was Eugene Morrison, from Eugene, Oregon.  He was part of the 12,000 paratroopers who were sent to drop over France just a few hours before landings on the beaches.  His plane was struck by anti aircraft fire and his entire crew died, except for one member who crawled over the dead bodies of his comrades.  Eugene is buried in the Normandy Cemetery along with 83 other Oregonians who died that day fighting for freedom from tyranny.  A few years ago, thousands of French people lined up on the Omaha beach.  They created the words "France will never forget."  We, as Americans, will also never forget the brave soldiers who prepared to give the utmost for our freedoms.
